OTT TV Market to generate $32bn in Subscription Revenues by 2019 – Juniper Research

juniperAccording to a recent report by Juniper Research, subscriptions from ‘over-the-top’ (OTT) TV providers such as Netflix and Amazon Prime will generate $31.6 billion by 2019, up from just under $8 billion in 2014.

The report shows that continued growth in the established markets of West Europe and North America, along with the emergence of key OTT players in the Far East and Asia Pacific, will bring a surge in the uptake of OTT subscriptions over the next four years.

The report showed that OTT services are seeing a rapid uptake by consumers who want to view content, when and where it suits them. The report argued that traditional broadcasters are facing increased competition as more services go over-the-top of pay TV incumbents, allowing distributors such as Sling TV to provide customers with a cheaper, tailored alternative to cable TV, driving the trend for ‘cord-cutting’.

Though Netflix and YouTube have launched 4K (ultra-high definition) services, the adoption of 4K content has been slow thus far. Juniper is predicting this to change over the next 2 years. Netflix added its 4K offering to its highest priced subscription package last year, showing belief that consumers are willing to pay for higher quality content, while OTT providers are gaining recognition as being the first to supply viewers with content in this new format. Meanwhile, 4K TVs will continue to become more affordable, accelerating hardware take-up.

The report also predicted that over 84% of OTT subscriptions will be made via connected TVs by 2019. Also, IPTV revenues are set to more than double between 2014 and 2019, rewarding Network Operator’s investment in Triple and Quad-Play Services.

[Infographic] iPhone 6 Most Wanted Features: Surprising Expectations

So what’s in store for future iPhones? We can get some clues from Apple patents registered with the U.S. Trademark and Office. Apple is developing an audio jack to double as a headphone jack, plus an audio transducer that doesn’t need a grille to emit sound. That means future iPhones can be totally enclosed or water-proofed. Another patent talks about combining motion analyzer, scenery analyzer, and lockout mechanism to detect if you’re driving and disable Messages Apps. With the increasing text-induced car accidents, expect this feature sooner than later.

Yet another patent indicates that Apple is cooking an intelligent Home Page that brings up the app you need for specific scenarios like when you need to show an electronic ticket in an airport or an e-coupon at a counter. The patent uses location-based signals and tracks user data patterns like calendars, emails, notes, etc. to predict when to bring up the app.

But let’s not talk about the future; rather, let’s see what iPhone users want today.

After Xiaomi, One Plus One planning India launch this year.

One Plus One

One Plus One India LaunchApple of China, Xiaomi launched its MI3 phone through flipkart last week. Its a fantastic phone for sure, I did manage to get to check the phone and its an exciting phone, loved it.

Another much awaited Chinese phone (invitation-only) is One Plus One, which is now planning to launch in India. I have been following this company for a while and would definitely love to lay my hands on the One Plus One.  Quite impressed with its slick design.

Internationally, it’s available at a starting price of $299 (unlocked and without contract) for the 16GB model (which comes to around Rs 18,000), while the 64GB variant is available at $349 (roughly Rs 21,500). But at the moment, the OnePlus One is only available through an invite system.

Have a look at the One Plus One video .

The OP One sports a large 5.5-inch LTPS IPS display with 1080×1920 pixel resolution and offers a pixel density of 401ppi. The display comes with Gorilla Glass 3 protection and the same adaptive backlight technology that’s seen in some Sharp displays. In addition, the phone is one of the few to have 3GB of RAM and is powered by the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.5GHz with Adreno 330 GPU. There’s a a 13-megapixel rear IMX214 sensor with a six-lens array and f/2.0 aperture that boasts quick shutter speed of only 0.3-seconds. It also comes with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. There’s no microSD card slot in the phone, so you are stuck with the 16 or 64 GB onboard storage.

Software wise, the One features a customised version of CyanogenMod ROM called CM 11S. It’s not unlike CM we know from custom ROMs but with some specific new features for this phone. The software is based on Android 4.4 KitKat, so you are getting the latest version too. Connectivity are top of the line; users get 4G LTE (region dependent), Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC functionality. iPhone 6: It’s Finally In Sight – We Think!

Iphone 6

Don’t tell anyone but rumour has it the iPhone 6 is going into production in China.

Of course you don’t need to tell anyone because the whole world probably now knows. It’s one of the most highly anticipated releases of all time, and it’s expected to finally hit the shelves in mid-September.

September 19th to be precise. And whilst we’re all extremely excited by the release, what do we actually expect? Bloggers, experts, and well pretty much everyone have conflicting stories as to what’s going to be going on inside the next-gen Apple.

We’ve seen plenty of mock-ups, and heard plenty more rumours, so we think it’s about time to give a conclusive round-up to figure out exactly what we’re going to get this autumn.

Two Sizes

It seems pretty certain that Apple is going to tap into the phablet market, managing to squeeze a size in between the iPhone and iPad Mini. A 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch device is expected to drop, competing with the larger phones such as the Samsung Galaxy range, as we continually ask our devices to do more and more for us.

Improved Battery Life

If there’s been one criticism of Apple’s range over the last few years, it’s the battery life. Draining quicker than a sieve, it’s been impossible to spend hours on the likes of Football Manager or long sessions in Royal Vegas Canada, but with a new A8 processor, expecting to focus more on being more efficient than the A7 rather than faster we could see the problem finally solved.

Shock Proof Housing

Smashing your phone running down stairs or in a bar after one too many in the pub could be a thing of the past with liquidmetal and sapphire casing. And it’ll be certainly welcomed. Although that’s not all Apple may have up their sleeve. The California based brand is also exploring other ways to toughen up their devices, which could find their way into the 6.

A shock-absorbing bit of kit is also being discussed to be put into the next iPhone’s insides to reduce damage and keep their devices crack free.

The iWatch

Talked about more than a twerking Miley Cyrus, the iWatch is hot on the agenda and could see its release coincide with the next-gen iPhone. Wearable technology has already been introduced by Samsung and a host of other brands so Apple will want to try and corner the market sooner rather than later.

Whilst experts are suggesting it will work as a standalone device, plenty will be encouraged to sync up with smartphones and tablets, with the 6 the likely partner to walk hand in hand with it. Whether they will both come out at the same time, it’s unsure, but one thing is for certain; September can’t come around quick enough.

SSDs are Hot and more reliable then HDD’s, have greater endurance and perform better

Brinell SDD

One of the most popular SSD website today in the market is Brinnell  which is the best external SSD and extremely fast external SSD drive which has an integrated hard drive Samsung 840 EVO and USB 3.0 interface. Premium-quality brinell products allow permanent secure storage of your data – private, and protected from external access. The low weight and compact dimensions as well as fast data transfer thanks to USB 3.0 make the brinell products comfortable to use.

A solid-state drive (SSD) also known as Solid State Disk have become the most preferred storage drive today. Although SSDs are still not cheap, they have come down in price, making them a better alternative to hard drives. SSDs today are far more reliable, have greater endurance and perform better (in some cases, two to three times better). Most of the advantages of solid-state drives over traditional hard drives are due to their ability to access data completely electronically instead of electromechanically, resulting in superior transfer speeds and mechanical ruggedness. Field failure rates indicate SSDs are significantly more reliable than HDDs. The startup time required by SSD’s are almost instantaneous whereas disk spin-up may take several seconds on HDD .

SSDs do not usually require any special cooling and can tolerate higher temperatures than HDDs. According to Seagate, ambient temperatures above 95 °F (35 °C) can shorten the life of a hard disk, and reliability will be compromised at drive temperatures above 131 °F (55 °C). Fan cooling may be required if temperatures would otherwise exceed these values. Solid state drives, essentially semiconductor memory devices mounted on a circuit board, are small and light in weight. HDDs typically have the same form factor but may be heavier. This applies for 3.5-inch drives, which typically weigh around 700 grams.
Less expensive SSDs typically have write speeds significantly lower than their read speeds. Higher performing SSDs have similar read and write speeds. Whereas HDDs generally have slightly lower write speeds than their read speeds.
There are two types of SSD’s internal  & external SSD drive. Internal SSD drives are used to achieve shorter boot-up times whereas  external SSd drives can make backups easier and faster. The external  SSD’s are more expensive in comparison but are used more and more in professional environments to avoid exposing sensitive data via the internet or cloud. There is another set of drives which is also used today called Hybrid drives or solid state hybrid drives (SSHD). It  is a combination of  the features of SSDs and HDDs in the same unit, containing a large hard disk drive and an SSD cache to improve performance of frequently accessed data

The development of Lithium-ion batteries

The Lithium-ion battery is being used increasingly in portable devices and finding the right one to suit your needs can noticeably improve your user experience. There are many specialized online shops that boast impressive ranges. Leading online suppliers such as RS Components and Premier Farnell, for example, have a wide range of batteries available online, including Lithium-ion ones, which offer several advantages compared to standard battery types.

Benefits of Li-ion batteries

The use of Lithium-ion batteries has been boosted recently due to their adaptability for mobile phones and laptops. They have a higher energy density and lower weight than the nickel-based alternatives, making them ideal for portable devices. Approximately five billion Li-ion batteries were sold worldwide last year.

Possible drawbacks

Despite the huge benefits of Li-ion batteries, their uses have been somewhat confined to small items such as laptops and mobile phones. Their suitability for electric cars is a matter of debate as such vehicles need a battery of 500 watt-hours per kilogram. The current batteries on the market only provide about 150 watt-hours, compared to petrol’s 12,000. Consequently, much more development is needed if the Li-ion battery is to be suitable for motor cars.

Development of the Li-ion is ongoing and some companies are adapting it by using non-flammable materials. Meanwhile, improvements are being made to the performance of the battery by getting more energy stored in the same available space and also making the battery capable of holding its charge for longer periods of time.

Further developments in lithium will see batteries getting even smaller, some as small as grains of sand, while greater use will be made of solar power, which will increase the number of ways the batteries can be recharged.

There is also work going into extending the life of the batteries. Their performance declines a couple of years into their life, but new technology in wireless recharging could extend this considerably.

The future

Some believe that lithium technology is already showing signs of age. While the aforementioned advances will ensure lithium will remain dominant for a while, long term, there cannot be a reliance on it if we want improved performance from our gadgets and vehicles.

Maybe, as some researchers claim, there will be increases in the sources of energy used to power devices and there will be no need for batteries at all? Ambient backscatter is already used to power devices and its further development could make batteries obsolete. This is doubtful as it is likely only to be available for the smallest of devices and laptops, with electric cars having to rely on batteries for a long time to come.

Assuming that batteries will continue to be used, magnesium ion may replace lithium in the future because magnesium is more abundant and therefore cheaper. Lithium air is another possibility, differing from Li-ion as it allows much greater “charge storage”. Neither of these alternatives is the finished article but their development may be viewed more closely in the coming years.

By 2018, Global Phablet Shipments to Reach Over 120 Million Units

juniperA recent report by Juniper Research has revealed that sales of big-screen smartphones, popularly termed as Phablets, will reach over 120 million units by 2018, rising from an estimated 20 million in 2013. According to the report, the device will find particularly receptive markets in East Asian territories such as South Korea – with gamers who desire a larger surface to play on, and China – where content streamers will benefit from a higher quality screen.

The report found that the Phablet market could become a growth area for established smartphone vendors, allowing them to build flagship phablet models targeting tech heavy demographics. As proved by the recent entry of new vendors, including Nokia, Alcatel and Intex, the Phablet market will likely grow from both ends of the price spectrum with established global brands predicated to focus on higher price points allowing local players to gain a foothold in the lower end.

According to the Juniper Report, the OS market for Phablets will be dominated by two major players, Android and Windows. The Windows ecosystem will be driven by Nokia’s Lumia range, which is anticipated to find success in the more affluent demographics of developing nations. Meanwhile, the Android ecosystem will be driven by the latest in Samsung’s Note series in developed markets as well as local vendors such as Intex.
