YouTube Hits A Billion Monthly Users

youtube-logoOn Wednesday online video sharing platform YouTube announced that it has more than a billion unique users each month. According to the company, nearly one out of every two people on the Internet visits YouTube.

The blog post stated that the monthly viewership of YouTube is the equivalent of roughly ten Super Bowl audiences.

“If YouTube were a country, we’d be the third largest in the world after China and India,” the team said. It further added,”PSY and Madonna would have to repeat their Madison Square Garden performance in front of a packed house 200,000 more times. That’s a lot of Gangnam Style!”

The company further stated that all of the Ad Age Top 100 brands are now running campaigns on YouTube.

Founded in 2005, YouTube was bought by Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion.

Around 30% Youtube India Viewers Access Videos On Mobile – Google Study

youtube-logoAccording to a recent online survey conducted by Google, around one-third of YouTube viewers in India access videos on their mobiles and spend over 48 hours a month on the website. The online survey was conducted on more than 2000 Indians.

The study revealed that almost two-thirds of the viewers on YouTube in India are under 35 years of age. The survey also revealed an emerging consumer class on YouTube, which it nicknamed ‘Generation C’ and represents a young, tech savvy group of youngsters.

The study said,”Generation C switches between devices 27 times a day, and Indian users watch nearly 30 percent of their YouTube videos on mobile. Smartphone owners spend one quarter of their YouTube time on mobile, while tablet owners spend about 20 percent.”

According to Google, increase in smartphone penetration in India will also lead to an increase in opportunities for brands to personally reach Gen C.

The study found that more than 70 percent of YouTube’s viewers in India are under the age of 35, while 72 percent have a college degree or higher. The survey also found that more than half of Indian YouTube users share videos on social networks and the same proportion also shares videos from YouTube on email. Around three quarters of the users visit the site mentioned the video.

YouTube to offer online rentals of 500 Paramount films, which includes "Hugo" and "The Godfather

YouTube, the world’s most popular online video website, streams 4 billion videos every day and its users upload more than 60 hours of video to the site every minute. Although much of the content on YouTube consists of home videos that are free to watch, YouTube has increasingly added professionally-produced content, some of it available to rent for a fee.

YouTube has announced a movie rental partnership with Paramount Pictures. It would offer online rentals of nearly 500 Paramount films, including “Hugo” and “The Godfather,” rounding out its growing catalog of feature-length movies.

The Paramount deal means that YouTube now has movie rental deals with five of the six major film studios, as well as more than ten independent film studios, giving it access to a catalog of nearly 9,000 films.

Consumers can rent the films, generally for 24 hours or 48 hours, for anywhere from $2.99 to $3.99.

The Paramount movies, which include recent releases and classics, will be available in the United States and Canada over the next few weeks. Consumers can rent the movies on the YouTube website, or on Google Play, Google’s online storefront for music, games, movies and other types of media.

Nominations for the 84th Oscar awards announced via live stream on YouTube, drives masses to the mobile devices

On Tuesday morning, the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced via live stream on YouTube.

One of the biggest days in entertainment each year, the morning of the announcements attract the attention of millions of movie fans around the world, who flock to their mobile devices – this year in record numbers – to see who earned nominations.

“Twitter and YouTube were the dominant players in this morning’s announcement,” independent business analyst and social media expert Mike Randazzo tells Mobile Marketing Watch.

Last year marked the first time the Academy rolled out a dedicated YouTube channel to announce the nominations.

“It’s clearly grown over the past twelve months,” Randazzo says. “Today, everyone knew right where to turn. The TV played little or no role in today’s announcement for people. It was a mobile event and web event more than anything.”
