Pinterest Launches New Data Analytic Tool For Businesss

pinterestVirtual pinboard Pinterest is rolling out new tools that will show businesses the number of visitors it delivers to their websites. Currently Pinterest doesn’t display any revenue-generating advertising on its website, but retailers and large brands such as The Gap, Patagonia and Dell are increasingly using the site to promote their products.

The new tool, which will be available free to businesses that use Pinterest on Tuesday, will also provide information about user activity on Pinterest as it relates to a particular company, such as the frequency with which people are clicking on a company’s online photos.

Commenting on this, Cat Lee, a product manager at Pinterest said,”The goal is really to help websites understand what content is resonating with people on Pinterest.”

Pinterest raised a funding of $200 million in February from venture capital firms that include Andreessen Horowitz and Bessemer Venture Partners. The funding deal valued the three-year-old company at $2.5 billion. Pinterest was the 38th most visited website by U.S. Internet users in January, with roughly 30 million unique visitors according to online measurement firm comScore.

Pinterest Introduces Latest Version Of Its Android App

pinterestVirtual pinboard Pinterest has introduced the latest version of its Android App . This update is now live and available on the Google Play Store.

With this new update, it’s easier to pin with other people on-the-go.

Users can now check out which other contributors are pinning to the same board as them, allowing them to spot those with similar interests. Users now have more control over boards. They can accept/ignore new board invitations or leave group boards that they’re already a part of.

Pinterest Launches Pinterest Business Pages

After the introduction of “Secret Boards”, popular online Pinboard Pinterest recently launched business pages.  This feature enables users to create business pages. Announcing this, the Pinterest blog stated,”Thousands of businesses have become part of our community, giving great ideas, content and inspiration to people on Pinterest. We want to help more businesses provide great content on Pinterest and make it easy to pin from their websites. Today, we’re taking a first step toward that goal with some free tools and resources.”

Who can setup a Pinterest business page? Well, if you’re a publication, brand, designer, blogger, retailer, online merchant, non-profit organization, institution, or local business, you are eligible to create your Pinterest business page. Pinterest Introduces 'Secret Board' Feature

On Thursday, Pinterest  introduced the ‘secret boards’ feature for its users. This test feature will enable users to create three secret boards. Users who already have 3 secret boards, but wish to make a new one will need to delete one or make one of their current secret boards visible to everyone. However, if  a user is invited to contribute to someone else’s secret board, it won’t count against the 3-board limit.

The Pinterest blog stated,”You can use secret boards to keep track of holiday gifts, plan a special event, or work on a project you aren’t yet ready to share with the rest of the world. You can keep your secret boards to yourself or invite family and friends to pin with you.”

So how does a user create a secret board? To create a secret board from the web, users can visit their profile ,scroll down to the bottom and then click on Create a Secret Board. Users can also click Add+ on the top right-hand corner of Pinterest to select Create Board and turn the Secret button to On.

Mobile device users will have to first download the most recent version of Pinterest for iPhone, iPad, Android phone or Android tablet. After that, users will have to go to their profile, tap on the Boards tab, and scroll down to the bottom until they see a button that says Create a Secret Board.

Anything pinned to the secret board won’t show up anywhere else on Pinterest and only people invited by users can add to the typically theme-based online collages. The secret boards and pins are at the bottom of a users profile.

Currently, users can neither change a board back to secret after they’ve made it visible to everyone and nor can they change the existing boards to secret. For more information on secret boards

Social Media Demographics 2012, for 24 Social networking sites

In this age of Social Media, when almost everyone is on Social Networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Pinterest etc. we often wonder about the user demographics. A recent study conducted by Pingdom, on the demographics of Social Media sites, gives an in depth information on the average age and gender distribution on 24 of today’s most popular social networks and online communities. However, this doesn’t include Google+, as there is no data on Google+ in DoubleClick Ad Planner, the Google-owned tool that Pingdom uses to gather the data.

A look at the graph below shows that, more than half of the social media users are between 25 and 44 years old, 25% users are between 45-64 years, only 5 percent under 17 and only 1 percent over 65.

The study found that 55% of Twitter users are 35 or older; 63% of Pinterest users are 35 or older; 65% of Facebook users are 35 or older; 79% of LinkedIn users are 35 or older. Majority of users on sites like Reddit, Github, Hi5, Hacker News, devianART, Orkut are under 35 years.

The report further states that, the estimated age of the average social media user is just under 37 years old. LinkedIn has the oldest user base, with the average use er being 44.2 years old; average Facebook user is 40.5 years old; average Twitter user is 37.3 years old.

While examining the male-female gender ratio, the study found that 17 out of 24 sites  have more female (71%) than male users. The average gender distribution on these sites was 48.75% male, 51.25% female. The percentage of males in tech-focused sites was more – Slashdot (87% males), Hacker News (77% males), Stack Overflow (76% males).

Pinterest is the most female-dominated site (79% females), followed by Goodreads (70% females) and Blogger (66% females). Facebook and Twitter have the same gender distribution: 40% male, 60% female.

Pinterest introduces Android, iPad and iPhone apps

Social networking start-up Pinterest has introduced new apps for Android, iPad and iPhone. The apps can be downloaded at The company blog stated,”Whether you’re traveling to another city, checking out gadgets in a store, or cooking dinner in your kitchen, you can now take Pinterest with you. Our apps allow you to pin, discover, and access your account from wherever you choose.”

The Pinterest Android App makes it simple and fast to pin, so that the time users spend on Pinterest is as productive as possible. It works well on Android phones and tablets, irrespective of the device’s cost, speed or screen size.

The iPad app is perfect for sitting on the couch, on a train, or in bed where users can effortlessly discover, save and organize the things that interest them. The app offers users new ways to engage with pins, whether swiping the screen to resume browsing after viewing a board, or using the embedded browser to see what others are pinning from their favorite sites.

The faster, redesigned iPhone app introduces a 2-column layout that lets users see more, so that they can find the pins they’re looking for and get back to their lives more quickly.

Regardless of the device used, users can login or register with Facebook, Twitter or just an email address.Kindle Fire owners will be able to download Pinterest from the Amazon Appstore for Android.

Pinterest is a virtual pinboard that lets users to “pin” images and share them with others. It has grown to about 23 million users in July from about one million a year ago. Last week Pinterest opened its online service to the general public, ending a multi-year period in which users who signed up had to wait to be admitted by the company.
