Foursquare Introduces Three Major Changes To Its Android App Update

foursquareWith the recent update to its Android Application, Foursquare has introduced three major changes to the app. These changes aim to make it easier for users to find the best stuff nearby as soon as they open the app.

1. Foursquare has built a smoother search experience and moved Explore to the top of the home screen to make it easy to quickly find a place. Users can tap the search bar to find “nachos,” “Mexican,” or “margaritas,” or browse categories like coffee, food, and nightlife. Users can also choose the “Best Nearby” option when they tap the search bar to find top picks for interesting places in the area.

2. Now when users open the app, they’ll see a map up top that shows friends who are checked in nearby, along with recommendations for places that they might like.  Users can tap on the map to expand it, and zoom around to see even more of their friends. The nearby friends has been moved to the top of the stream so it’s easy to get a sense of who’s around.

3. Instead of three tabs at the bottom of the app, users will now have a drawer (tap the top left corner of the screen) where they can easily get to their profile, lists, and settings.

Besides these, other changes include the check in button’s new home on the bottom left, a simpler way to add friends, and interesting insights every time users check in.

Foursquare introduces Promoted Updates

Foursquare, the social network through which users can check-in at restaurants, retailers, and other venues, has introduced paid ads into its service. Currently in the pilot stage, these paid ads or Promoted Updates are the  paid version of Local Updates, or status updates for business owners, and will run in the Explore tab inside Foursquare’s mobile applications.

Last week Four Square introduced Local Updates to give merchants a free way to disperse specials, share photos, or communicate with their existing loyal customers on Foursquare. During the pilot period, around twenty small and large merchants including Walgreens, Best Buy, Old Navy, Butter Lane, and The Standard Miami will work with account managers to pick the updates or specials they want to push to new audiences to prompt them to visit their stores — not their websites.

Foursquare plans to take passive awareness beyond mobiles

Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley (pictured) revealed his vision for the future of the location-based check-in and recommendation service at Congress.

The company is working on ways of using customers’ data to automatically alert them of places and events in their vicinity that they’re likely to be interested in.

“It’s taking all the data we have and trying to make a way to make people passively aware of all the things that are going on without having to be in the app all the time,” Crowley said.

“We’re enabling people to cut through this data stream in a way that I don’t think anyone has done before,” he continued.

The recently-launched Radar feature within the Foursquare app already provides a basic version of this functionality, but Crowley sees  it migrating to interfaces beyond phones, such as head-up displays.

“It’s not science fiction. This is where Foursquare is going and this is a space where we’re really going to dominate,” Crowley said.

Foursquare recently passed the 15 million mark of people that have checked in using its service, with 1.5 billion check-ins having been made. “This is a big deal. This is generating a lot of interesting data points that allow us to do very sophisticated things,” the Foursquare chief added.
