appleYesterday Apple announced the launch of iTunes Radio, a free Internet radio service featuring over 200 stations and an incredible catalog of music from the iTunes Store, combined with features only iTunes can deliver.

iTunes U Content Downloads Tops One Billion

appleOn Thursday, Apple announced that its iTunes U content downloads have topped one billion. iTunes U features the world’s largest online catalog of free educational content from top schools and prominent libraries, museums and organizations helping educators create courses including lectures, assignments, books, quizzes and more for iOS users around the world.

Commenting on the overwhelming response, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of Internet Software and Services said,”It’s inspiring to see what educators and students of all types are doing with iTunes U. With the incredible content offered on iTunes U, students can learn like never before―there are now iTunes U courses with more than 250,000 students enrolled in them, which is a phenomenal shift in the way we teach and learn.”

More than 1,200 universities and colleges, and 1,200 K-12 schools and districts host over 2,500 public and thousands of private courses encompassing the arts, sciences, health and medicine, education, business and more. Leading universities including Duke, Yale, Cambridge, MIT and Oxford continue to extend their reach by enrolling more than 100,000 students in single iTunes U courses, with Stanford University and The Open University each surpassing 60 million content downloads. The Ohio State University’s Matthew “Dr. Fus” Stoltzfus’ General Chemistry course enrolled over 100,000 iTunes U students in the first year it was offered.

iTunes Store Sets New Record with 25 Billion Songs Sold

itunes-storeApple today announced that music fans have purchased and downloaded more than 25 billion songs from the iTunes Store, the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store. The 25 billionth song, “Monkey Drums” (Goksel Vancin Remix) by Chase Buch, was purchased by Phillip Lüpke from Germany. As the downloader of the 25 billionth song, Phillip will receive a €10,000 iTunes Gift Card.

Apple App Store Crosses 40 Billion App Downloads

appleYesterday Apple announced that it has seen over 40 billion app downloads (excluding re-downloads and updates), with nearly 20 billion in 2012 alone. Currently the App Store has over 500 million active accounts. Apple also had a record-breaking December with over two billion downloads during the month.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services said,”It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community. Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”

Currently Apple’s App Store offers more than 775,000 apps to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users in 155 countries around the world, with more than 300,000 native iPad apps available. App Store customers can choose from an incredible range of apps in 23 categories, including newspapers and magazines offered in Newsstand, games, business, news, sports, health & fitness and travel.

Apple iPad Mini Launched In India

After the launch of iTunes store in India, Apple will launch the iPad Mini in India today. It comes in both wi-fi and wi-fi cellular models. The Wi-Fi only iPad mini will be available for Rs. 21,900 for a 16 GB model.


The iPad Mini is 23% thinner (7.9mm) and 53% lighter (308g) than the iPad.  Ifeatures a 7.9 inch retina display with a resolution of 1024×768 pixels, powerful A5 chip, FaceTime HD camera, iSight camera with 1080p HD video recording, ultra-fast wireless and over 275,000 apps ready to download from the App Store. iPad mini is an iPad in every way, shape and slightly smaller form.

The iPad Mini also comes with FaceTime HD camera and a 5 megapixel iSight camera on the back with advanced optics for taking sharp still pictures and recording full 1080p HD video.

Apple Launches iTunes Store in India, Bollywood Movies now available

Apple has launched the iTunes Store in India offering consumers the ability to purchase music, buy or rent movies. The store lets users browse and buy songs, albums and films. Until now, the Indian iTunes Store only featured some free books and podcasts. But now, users can buy Bollywood songs, Tamil film songs to even international music from all major labels.

Apple also launched its iTunes Match service in India, which allows users to store music, bought from sources other than iTunes, in iCloud. This service is priced at Rs 1,200 per year. But, there are no TV shows listed, unlike various other international markets.

The iTunes Store debuted as the US-only iTunes Music Store in April 2003. It has since expanded to include movies and TV shows and until today was available in approximately 97 countries. In June, it added 12 Asian countries including Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan.

Some of the latest movies from Bollywood that has been featured are El Tha Tiger, Don2 etc.

Single songs are priced between Rs 7 and Rs 15 and albums start from Rs 70. Similarly, most movies are available for rent at Rs 80 in SD (Rs 120 in HD) and buy for Rs 290 in SD (Rs 490 in HD).

Apple Continues To Lead The Tablet Market With 55% Unit Shipment Share In Q3 2012

According to a recent report by ABI Research, Apple’s share of the tablet market continued to best all others with 55% unit shipment share in Q3 2012. However, inspite of maintaining its lead for 10 straight quarters, competition from tablets powered by Google’s Android OS continue to eat away at Apple’s success. Since the launch of iPad in 2010, fifty-five percent is the lowest share Apple has ever had.

Senior practice director Jeff Orr said,“With the introduction of a smaller, lower-cost iPad mini, Apple has acknowledged Android’s beachhead of 7-inch-class tablets, though at the same time, it has failed to deliver a knock-out punch through innovation, pricing, and availability during the most critical selling period of the year.”

As per the report, following Apple in shipment share this past quarter were Samsung, Amazon, and ASUS. ABI Research expects that iPad mini has caused demand for standard iPad models to shift down-market. Limited availability of iPad mini could be the saving grace as end-of-year buying ramps.

The report also revealed that nearly 14% share was given up in the quarter to several benefactors, including Amazon, Google, and Samsung. Android now powers more than 44% of tablet shipments. Orr said, “As the OS of choice for the majority of device OEMs, we expect the Android ecosystem to continue growing in numbers – new manufacturers, better device choices for reaching more markets, and more developers finding value from apps and content.”

Apple Launches iPad Mini with a 7.9-inch display

Yesterday Apple launched the iPad Mini, a smaller version of its hot-selling iPad. It has a complete new design that is 23 percent thinner and 53 percent lighter than the third generation iPad.

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing said,“iPad mini is every inch an iPad. With its gorgeous 7.9-inch display, iPad mini features the same number of pixels as the original iPad and iPad 2, so you can run more than 275,000 apps designed specifically for iPad. iPad mini is as thin as a pencil and as light as a pad of paper, yet packs a fast A5 chip, FaceTime HD and 5 megapixel iSight cameras and ultrafast wireless―all while delivering up to 10 hours of battery life.”

iPad Mini has a beautiful new aluminum and glass design that is just 7.2 mm thin and weighs only 0.68 pounds. The 7.9-inch Multi-Touch display delivers the same iPad experience users have come to expect, in a design that has 35 percent more screen real estate than 7-inch tablets and up to an astonishing 67 percent more usable viewing area when browsing the web. The dual-core A5 chip delivers responsive graphics and a fast, fluid Multi-Touch experience, while still providing all-day battery life.

It also features a front-facing FaceTime HD camera and a 5 megapixel iSight camera on the back with advanced optics for taking sharp still pictures and recording full 1080p HD video. Apple may unveil "iPad mini" in October

All Things Digital reported that, in October, Apple will be launching a new, smaller version of its iPad, the “iPad mini”. It said,”First comes the latest iteration of the tech giant’s hugely popular smartphone, which will be unveiled at an as yet unannounced event on September 12.”

It further added, “That device, which is expected to have a display of less than eight inches (20 centimeters), will be uncrated at a second special event, which sources say is currently scheduled for October.”
