Exclusive Interview with Kavin Bharti Mittal

Bharti Softbank (BSB), a joint venture between Bharti Enterprises and Japanese Internet firm Softbank Corp, has launched Hike, a peer-to-peer (P2P) messaging app that uses both data and SMS to deliver messages.

Unlike the cross-platform mobile messaging app WhatsApp, hike lets you message those who don’t have it, so now you can message a non-hike user as well.In other words, users need not install the app on their phones to receive messages. Hike also claims to have in-built filters that block spam SMS.
WirelessDuniya spoke with BSB’s Kavin Bharti Mittal ,Head of Strategy/New Product Development in an exclusive interview on the launch of the hike messaging app .

WD: Why did you guys chose to launch a Messaging app, when there are lots of apps available already ?

Kavin: India is crazy about messaging. There are over 400M SMS users in the country that send on average close to a 100 messages a month.

We see two big problems with messaging.

  1. Too much spam. SMS has become a channel for tele-marketers to try to get their messages across. Messaging over SMS isn’t pleasant anymore.
  2. Secondly, the SMS replacements are closed networks which means one needs the app at both the sender and the receivers end to communicate. This defeats the whole idea behind SMS which is open and ubiquitous communication.

We asked ourselves, why isn’t there an app that combines the real-time, free nature of an Instant Messaging app with the openness of SMS thats completely spam free? We couldn’t find a single app that did this hence we decided to go built it ourselves. We call it hike

WD : What are the key features of the hike app that sets it apart from the competition?

Kavin: I’d like to highlight the four key features that set it apart from the competition:

 1. It is Open
Messaging couldn’t be simpler than the hike experience. As long as you have hike, there is no need to worry whether your friends have hike or not. Send a message and hike handles the rest. If a friend isn’t on hike, we send the message over SMS to which your friend can reply to at normal SMS rates. The message comes straight back to the hike application making the conversation a lot more seamless. For both you and your friend messaging remains as its always been, though a whole new experience.

 2. It is Spam-free
hike has smart filters built in that block the spam you might see on SMS. These smart filters not only block spam but learn over time to be more efficient and predict in advance who spam users might be.
But just in case one or two slip out we give users the full set of tools to take control. Blocking spam users is just a tap away.

 3. Its absolutely Free
On top of all that, messaging on hike is completely free. You can message your friends and family for free especially those who aren’t on hike. hike to hike is always free but our users receive 100 free hike SMS every month to message those who aren’t on hike.

Think 100 is too little? No problem. The more friends our users invite the more free hike SMS they’ll get. Each user earns an additional 10 free hike SMS per month for each friend that joins hike because of him.

 4. Its Beautiful and Simple with a great intuitive user experience
We keep challenging ourselves to build a great intuitive user experience and simplicity is at the center of it. Its very complex to build something very simple. Most people believe adding features is what makes a product better. We believe in the exact opposite. That to us is a great user experience.

We also spend a ton of time making our apps pixel perfect. As a result, hike has turned out to be a stunning app, absolutely gorgeous and that isn’t only on the higher end devices.

You’ll have to look hard to find an app thats simpler to use and that looks this good.

WD: On what mobile platforms is the “hike” app currently available ?

Kavin: We have currently launched the Hike app on the Android platforms. You can download the app on your Android device by clicking on this download link: bit.ly/Nm6YZv .
Hike will also be available soon on , iOs, WP7, Blackberry, Nokia S60 & Others.

Exclusive Interview: Getit’s multiplatform location based marketplace app on mobile is a powerful local guide in India

Interview with Mr. Sidharth Gupta: CEO Getit Infoservices Pvt. Ltd

WirelessDuniya caught up with Mr. Sidharth Gupta (CEO Getit Infoservices Pvt. Ltd.) who gave us an interesting insight into Getit’s multiplatform marketplace app.

What is GETIT?
Ans: Getit is India’s leading information service provider which provides information on sellers of products and services across categories to prospective buyers.  In effect, Getit:

•    Provides quality leads to businesses.
•    Provides relevant information about businesses to consumers and also connects consumers and enables them to sell and buy used products and services through its Classifieds networks.

Getit is, thus, one of India’s largest SME channels reaching out to over 1.2 million SMEs, with sales force of over a 1000 people, annually.  Each month, more than 3 million users contact Getit through various media to conduct searches to find relevant buyers/suppliers.

What was the reason for GETIT to introduce a mobile app?
Ans: At Getit, we have always believed in providing quality information to consumers through the medium/device of their choice.  In the past, we used to do it very effectively through print and in the recent past through our voice services and online sites.  However, we believe that in the future the most powerful medium is most likely to be mobile phone and thus it makes imminent sense to distribute apps for mobile devices so as to increase our usage manifold.

What are the key features of the mobile app? What platforms is the app available?
Ans: Recently we have integrated NearMe, a key feature to our mobile app.

With this feature, whenever a user searches for something, he gets results closest to his location which is more appropriate and useful. ‘NearMe’ feature lets the user discover the nearest restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, ATMs etc. within a customized radius.
Also, Getit’s local search enables users to do the following:

i) Auto detects your current location using GPS
ii) Interactive map with directions
iii) Share businesses via email & SMS
iv) Refine your search based on attributes and location
v) Call any business with a single click/tap
vi) Save favourite listings on your device
Getit is the only company which has developed local search app across all the major mobile platforms.  Getit apps are available across iOS, BlackBerry, Symbian, Java, Android and Windows Phone.

How beneficial is the GETIT app for the buyer and the advertiser?
Ans: From the buyer’s perspective:
i)    The app is absolutely free to use, easily available at all app stores and downloadable.
ii)    The user interface is very simple to use and the experience quite empowering as is evident from the feedback that we have received and from the 4-star out of 5-star rating average across most app stores.

Thus, Getit app becomes an avenue for buyers to be able to quickly find sellers anytime, anywhere since their mobile devices are most likely to be with them.

From an advertiser perspective, the app allows businesses to connect with consumers who are on the move since Getit app is very popular and it already has about half-a-million downloads across various channels and platforms.  Thus, advertisers i.e. businesses get more and more leads through the usage of the app.

With so many classified and local search apps available in the market, how different are you from the competition?
Ans: There are 3 distinct areas which make the Getit app stand ahead of its competitors:
i)    The depth and quality of data: We currently have more than 3 million records in our databases and we cover most cities in the country.  Each search can be refined based on specific parameters for that category and the app integrates maps and features for various devices wherein contacting the establishment is very easy.
ii)    The usability: Getit app has got great reviews across platforms and devices.  It is easy to use, simple and fast and delivers great results.
iii)    Availability across all platforms: We are rather the only app which is available across platforms.  More and more users can benefit from the power of the Getit app.

Where can I download the app from? What has been your app promotion strategy?
Ans: The app can be downloaded from several app stores like google play, App world, Aircel/Airtel app stores, Mobango , getjar etc.  Also the same can be downloaded from online app stores as detailed below:

i)     Apple IOS
ii)    Blackberry
iii)    Android
iv)    Windows phone
v)    Java

Saavn: A Spotify For Bollywood Music Has 9.3 Million Users Worldwide

Saavn-The music streaming service now has 9.3 million users worldwide, and adds another 125,000 new users per month–five times as many as this time last year.

Like Spotify, Saavn lets users create, play, and share playlists. Pandora-like, it also hosts radio stations. In app form and on the web, Saavn is prettier than competitors Gaana or Raaga and more legal than hindimirchi or musicindiaonline. Saavn says it has licensed rights to the “most comprehensive catalogue of Bollywood, Indian and regional South Asian music anywhere,” from 200 providers in 22 languages.

As Saavn’s newest numbers show, it has seen some promising growth this last year. Saavn now has 9.3 million users worldwide, and adds another 125,000 new users per month–five times as many as this time last year. (That’s a 25% jump in subscriptions overall.) Two million members connect via Facebook, where Saavn content is published every five seconds. Facebook users have made 1 billion Facebook impressions overall. Two million mobile users have downloaded the Saavn app, and every 10 seconds someone somewhere downloads another, all contributing to 1 million daily streams. Considering it is finding new ways to give people free access to the already explosively popular Bollywood music industry, those numbers are likely to get bigger.

Saavn has two clear strengths. First there’s that massive that trove of legally acquired high-quality streaming content, which Saavn says represents 99% of Bollywood music anywhere. Second, there’s Saavn’s custom-designed intelligent search algorithm.

India accounts for 58% of traffic overall, 68% of their Android users, and 27% of their iPhone users.

Saavn has other serious plans and partnerships with device makers and operating systems, in addition to its existing Facebook partnership, which will help grow in the country, and its Chrome and Android apps. There’s apps in the pipeline for Symbian, BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile.

Saavn is partnering with device makers like HTC and Huawei to have it pre-installed on devices readied for sale in India. Responding to customer requests, they are also planning to launch a paid subscription service, which will allow subscribers to download tracks onto their phones and listen to content offline.
