airtelTelecom provider Bharti Airtel has launched Apna Chaupal- a first-of-its kind voice based one stop solution portal for value added services. Designed especially for the rural and semi-urban market, the Apna Chaupal service aims to empower mobile customers across the country to easily browse and subscribe from a bouquet of value added services while on the move by just dialling 58080 toll free.  While calls to the IVR number 58080 is toll free, customers would be charged applicable subscription rates for the service packs subscribed.

The voice based service will provide information in the regional language of the customers on key day-to-day activities including agriculture, devotion, job updates, entertainment, education and health. The service will enable customers to easily access a host of informative services like learning agricultural techniques, receive instant updates on Mandi rates and Government jobs, listen to Live Aarti’s from popular religious shrines, access entertainment services like Hello Tunes, Comedy FM and radio, receive ball-by-ball updates on cricket matches, learn English, seek career counselling and much more on their mobile phones with just a simple voice call.

VAS Report: Airtel Mobitude 2012 :150 Million Music Downloads, 65% Jump in Traffic for MobileTV, 3 million downloads on Airtel App Central per month

According to the findings of Airtel Mobitude 2012 – India recorded over 75 million wallpapers (with 300% growth) and 150 million plus music downloads this year. While Chikni Chameli from Agneepath was the most downloaded song of the year, its actress Katrina Kaif continued to maintain the leading position in the category of images downloaded for the 4th consecutive year, followed by Kareena Kapoor Khan. Among actresses, hearthrob Deepika Padukone drops out of the top 5 list, making way for Vidya Balan and newcomer Anushka Sharma. Among actors, Shah Rukh Khan led in the category of Bollywood actors’ wallpaper downloads. While Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor continue to shine in top 5, Bollywood stalwart Aamir Khan did not fare in this list for the 3rd year in a row. In the Hollywood segment, Kim Kardashian led in the category of images downloaded and also featured in the top 5 Hollywood celebrities.

In another trend reported this year, wallpaper downloads of female actresses outnumbered the same recorded for their male counterparts by over 6788%. South India showed a strong traction for imagery – with Tollywood sensation Trisha seeing downloads 325% higher than the numbers seen for top 5 Bollywood actors put together. Among sports stars’ imagery downloads, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar dropped down to the second rank as Yuvraj Singh claimed the numero uno spot.

Popular hit Kolaveri Di (which recorded maximum success ever and triggered 2,10,000 downloads in a span of 18 days last year) continued to maintain the top position in 2012 as well. Though reasonably popular, the worldwide rage Gangnam Style did not experience similar success among mobile internet users in India and could not beat Kolaveri Di’s strong local success. The song Teri Meri from Bodyguard ranked second in this segment, lagging behind by 20%.

Dabangg tops charts as the most viewed movie on Airtel Video Talkies, while Singham led on Airtel Audio Talkies. Bollywood blockbuster and epic hit Sholay continues to be an all-time favorite with customers, who till date, are tuning into the audio edition of the movie on Airtel Audio Talkies. Movie inspired games are the new rage in mobile gaming – Agneepath, Spiderman & Agent Vinod games topped charts and left behind popular games Tekken and SoulCalibur.

This year’s analysis also highlighted a fast increasing customer preference for MobileTV, thus resulting in a whopping 65% jump in traffic experienced by the service over last year. Within the MobileTV category, IPL viewing minutes jumped a record breaking 74% and viewership increased over 46% from numbers witnessed in 2011. Sony TV ranked number 1 among television channels. The traction seen by MobileTV reinforces India’s growing demand for data driven services that help customers get their dose of the best and latest in entertainment.

In 2012, India went the MMS way by crossing the 1 million mark on Diwali and jumped 145% on the festive day for the first time in the country’s MMS traffic history. The Navratri festival topped all events in terms of specialized content download traffic.

On the data side, maximum data consumption on mobile internet is typically seen during the graveyard shift between 10pm – 11pm. The Airtel mobile internet usage pattern indicates growing customer preference for social networking, looking at pictures, downloading applications, playing games, listening to music, reading news and watching videos. Video consumption is reported at its highest during night hours. Specifically, 3 video streaming and download sites fared among ‘Top 10 websites’ in 2012 (compared with only 1 last year) – thus showing growing popularity of the category.

Overall, Facebook, Google and Yahoo were most accessed websites. Google is most visited website in terms of Unique Users, while Facebook leads all sites with almost 10 times Page Views and data consumption.

An average of 3 million downloads on Airtel App Central were recorded every month. With 90% downloads in the ‘Free’ category, customers show a preference for the ‘freemium’ model. While 65% of application downloads are games, other popular categories including social networking, video and music players, sports, health and other entertainment.

Airtel Nigeria Appoints Segun Ogunsanya As Chief Executive Officer

Leading telecommunications services provider Bharti Airtel announced the appointment of Segun Ogunsanya as the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Networks Ltd, Nigeria (“Airtel Nigeria”). A Chartered Accountant, he holds a Bachelors of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from University of Ife, Nigeria.

As CEO, Mr. Ogunsanya will be responsible for defining and delivering the business strategy and providing overall leadership for Airtel Nigeria. He will be reporting to Manoj Kohli, CEO (International) and Joint MD, Bharti Airtel. The appointment is effective November 26, 2012.

He takes over from Rajan Swaroop, who has successfully led operations at Airtel Nigeria for the past two years. Rajan will be appointed as Non-Executive Director on the Board of Airtel Nigeria following the completion of the transition process and will continue to work closely with the Airtel Nigeria leadership team.

Mr. Ogunsanya brings with him over 24 years of rich industry experience across multiple geographies, organisations and diverse sectors such as Coca Cola, Banking and Arthur Anderson.

Commenting on the appointment, Mr. Manoj Kohli, said, “I am delighted to have Segun on board and am confident that his rich and diverse experience will add immense value to our operations in Nigeria. Airtel launches SmartDrive-A Voice Based Turn by Turn Navigation App With Real Time Traffic

India’s top Telecom Operator Airtel has launched a navigation application – SmartDrive – that enables users to view their location on a map and plan the route from one place to another.

“SmartDrive is assisted by a voice based turn by turn navigation that gives real time information updates on traffic situation on roads around.

“It also suggests the subscriber an alternate route in case of traffic congestion on the normal route.

SmartDrive offers services such as search for points of interests like restaurants, theatres and shopping malls, and voice navigation.

It also offers live traffic information.

The service is currently available in Delhi and NCR, Mumbai and Bangalore and will be made available in Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune by December.

While search and map views are being offered for free, a daily pack for navigation services costs Rs 10, its monthly pack would cost Rs 99. Live traffic services would cost Rs 3 per day while a monthly pack would be for Rs 49.

The company is offering data browsing free till Nov 30, post which normal data usage charges will apply as per the data pack availed by the customer.

Bharti Airtel launches 'My Airtel' app

Yesterday, Bharti Airtel launched the ‘my airtel’ app that will enable subscribers of any operator to check outstanding bills, register complaints, activate or deactivate services and make payments for Airtel services.

Without paying any extra cost, Airtel customers across various services (mobile, fixed line and DTH), will be able to check their outstanding bills, recharge their accounts and make payment among other services. Besides, Airtel digital TV (DTH service) customers can use this app to order movies and games without any assistance from the customer care.

Bharti Airtel President-Consumer Business, K Srinivas said,”Indian customers are increasingly accessing online content through apps as opposed to the conventional route of logging through browsers. In tune with these changes, ‘my airtel’ app has been designed to empower our customers and help them manage all their airtel services, effortlessly.”

According to a statement from Airtel, the usual download charges depending on the subscriber data connection will apply for downloading the application as well as accessing the application. It further added that, for non-Airtel internet users, there will also be one-time SMS charge for authentication to their respective telecom operators.

Bharti Airtel gets exclusive video rights of UEFA Euro 2012

Soccer fans in India can now enjoy the UEFA Euro 2012 on their mobile devices, even while on the move. Bharti Airtel has bagged exclusive mobile and video content rights for the European Football Championship – UEFA Euro 2012- from June 8 to July 1.

More than 180 million Airtel mobile consumers across India will now have exclusive access to mobile and video content of all the action at UEFA Euro 2012. This will include live streaming of matches from the tournament where Europe’s top 16 soccer teams including Germany, England and Portugal will fight for the winner’s title in 19 power packed matches that will span across 21 days.

To watch a live match, users have to send a text message to Airtel and pay Rs 40 a week for 80 minutes on 2G network and 40 minutes on 3G network.  Apart from this, they can receive SMS updates on scores, goals, match analysis or subscribe to get two video messages a day along with six text messages on latest match updates for Rs 3 per match day. They can download football games at Rs.99 per game or subscribe to MoFutbol- the country’s first ever mobile magazine on football. Through MoFutbol users can get high-resolution photo and video stories on the tournament.

Available across 300 key cities in India – airtel money is a fast, simple and secure service that allows its users to load cash on their mobile devices and spend it to pay utility bills and recharges, shop at 7,000+ merchant outlets, transact online etc.

Apart from serving as an easy alternative to cash / card payment options, airtel money has now become the first mobile based service to offer customers the convenience of instant money transfer from an airtel money wallet to another airtel money wallet and bank accounts.
