India’s Micromax giving Samsung a run for their money

According to the latest report by International Data Corporation (IDC) Micromax is closing the gap with Samsung to become the leader in the Indian mobile phone market. The report shows that Samsung’s market share has fallen to from 32.7% to 26% in the second quarter of 2013 whilst home-grown manufacturer Micromax continues to strengthen its position as the number two provider, with a 22% market share.

The mobile market in India is growing rapidly and sales of smart phones, tablets and phablets have nearly tripled in the last year. The demand for mobile equipment with a larger display has increased dramatically, with devices featuring a 5 inch or bigger screen being 17 times more popular than they were a year ago. The popularity of the larger screen indicates that consumers are using their mobile devices more for gaming and other web based activities, such as streaming movies or watching video clips. Sites like  are able to offer optimised and compatible games for a variety of different devices and consumers have caught on to the free apps and downloads that are freely available for all popular OS.

Initial dominance of the Indian mobile market by foreign brands such as Samsung and Sony is waning and local manufacturers like Micromax are overtaking these brands. A similar instance occurred in China, where initially Samsung and Apple had the early advantage on the market and have now been replaced with local companies such as Lenovo and Huawei. The potential for growth in India is massive and it’s estimated that by 2017 market sales will have surged from 400 million units to 749 million. It’s no surprise then that local manufacturers are vying for a share of the market and establishing themselves as a preferred supplier.

The trend for buying local has been influenced by currency woes which make foreign imports so much more expensive. But even without this factored in, Micromax has been giving Samsung some serious competition as their devices are quality products that cater specifically to local requirements.

Micromax is now close to becoming the top smart phone manufacturer in a market that is the 3rd largest in the world. Beaten only by the U.S and China, this Indian consumer electronics company has taken on the global tech giants and looks set to emerge as victor in the next year.
