Google Launches Photo-Sharing App Snapseed

Google has launched a new photo-sharing app called Snapseed. With Instagram like functions, Snapseed allows users to edit images and share the same via Google+ or other social networks.

The Snapseed application developed by a company called Nik Software, was adjudged the best iPad app last year. Though earlier it was available for $4.99 for Apple devices, Snapseed is now available for free on both iOS and Android platforms. Google+ will also be adding a new feature called “Communities,” which makes the Google+ “hangouts” into permanent locations.

Global Smartphone Volume To Reach 224.5 million Units In Q4,2012

According to a recent reseach by IDC, Global smartphone volume is expected to reach 224.5 million units in Q4,2012, representing 39.5% year-over-year growth due primarily to strong consumer demand. At the same time, smartphone shipments are expecteed to grow 45.1% year over year to 717.5 million units.

This strong smartphone growth is driven by a variety of factors, including steep device subsidies from carriers, especially in mature economic markets where carriers resell the majority of smartphones, as well as a growing array of sub-US$250 smartphones in emerging markets.

According to IDC, Android will be the clear leader in the smartphone mobile operating system race, thanks in large part to a broad selection of devices from a wide range of partners. Samsung is the leading Android smartphone seller though resurgent smartphone vendors LG Electronics and Sony, both of which cracked the top five smartphone vendors during 3Q12, are not to be overlooked. IDC believes the net result of this will be continued double-digit growth throughout the forecast period.

 

IDC also forecasts that iOS will maintain its position as the clear number two platform behind Android at the end of 2012 and throughout the forecast. The popularity of the iPhone across multiple markets will drive steady replacements and additional carrier partners will help Apple grow iOS volume. However, the high price point of the iPhone relative to other smartphones will make it cost prohibitive for some users within many emerging markets.

According to IDC, the BlackBerry OS will grow slowly but largely maintain share over the coming years following the BlackBerry 10 launch next year. The new operating system and devices will be valued by some longtime BlackBerry fans, particularly those who have waited for the new OS as Research In Motion delayed its release. Windows Phone will battle with BlackBerry for the number three spot in 2013, but will gain further clarity in the years that follow. Linux will trail the market leaders throughout  the forecast period though it is expected to be the dark horse of the forecast.

LBS Revenues To Grow Over $6 Billion By 2017

A recent report by ABI Research has identified location-based retail applications, advertising, and emerging markets as key revenue growth enablers for the LBS market over the next 5 years. According to the report, over the last 12 months there has been a major change in the LBS landscape in BRIC countries. A number of copycat LBS start-ups have emerged in Brazil, China, Russia, and India, with millions of subscribers and significant funding behind them.

Senior analyst, Patrick Connolly said, “There is heavy investment, strong local and international competition, and most importantly, an appetite for these applications. This does raise fears over a tech bubble, but it is clear that there is an appetite for location-based services, particularly around local search, social networking, and deals/offers. Interestingly, location is baked into these applications from the start, removing many of the issues around privacy.”

The report found that advertising is now viewed by the majority of application developers as the main long-term source of revenue. In 2012, advertising remained less than 30% of total application store LBS revenues, but the signs of growth are there and more importantly the business models are there. Applications around local search and discovery, proximity social networking, and retail are ideally suited to high-value location-based advertising. In particular, ABI Research has forecast that location-based retail applications will emerge as the most downloaded LBS category by 2016 as retailers embrace the power of proximity and indoor location advertising and analytics.

Practice director, Dominique Bonte added, “The industry is ready to support a combination of generic and highly localized and targeted advertising that will take LBS revenues well beyond the $6 Billion market by 2017.”

Apple iPad Mini Launched In India

After the launch of iTunes store in India, Apple will launch the iPad Mini in India today. It comes in both wi-fi and wi-fi cellular models. The Wi-Fi only iPad mini will be available for Rs. 21,900 for a 16 GB model.


The iPad Mini is 23% thinner (7.9mm) and 53% lighter (308g) than the iPad.  Ifeatures a 7.9 inch retina display with a resolution of 1024×768 pixels, powerful A5 chip, FaceTime HD camera, iSight camera with 1080p HD video recording, ultra-fast wireless and over 275,000 apps ready to download from the App Store. iPad mini is an iPad in every way, shape and slightly smaller form.
