According to recent data released by TRAI, in June 2012, the telecom subscriber base in India reached 965.52 million. While the subscriber base in Urban India is over 621 million, Rural India accounts for over 343 million subscribers.
In June 2012, the share of urban subscribers declined from 64.65% to 64.40% whereas share of rural subscribers has increased to 35.60%. With this,the overall Teledensity in India reaches to 79.58 at the end of June, 2012 from 79.28 of the previous month.
The subscriber base in urban areas increased from 621.21 million in May, 2012 to 621.76 million at the end of June, 2012. During the same period, subscription in rural areas increased from 339.69 million to 343.76 million. Wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 596.98 million in May 2012 to 597.59 million at the end of June 2012. The wireless subscription in rural areas increased from 332.38 million to 336.51 million during the same period.
Requests for Mobile Number Portability rose to 54.33 million at the end of June 2012, as compared to 50.16 million in May 2012. According to the report, in June 2012, India had 695.82 million active wireless subscribers, which is 74.49% of the total subscriber base. The broadband subscriber base rose from 14.31 million in May 2012 to 14.50 million in June 2012.
