eBay, the online marketplace announced it was on target to reach the $5 billion mark by the close of 2011 back in November, which was largely thanks to the 56 million plus downloads of its mobile app.
Following that milestone, eBay CEO John Donahoe is counting on the firm to notch up $8 billion via mobile sales in 2012.
He made the announcement at CES in Las Vegas and said that the eBay mobile app has now received more than 65 million downloads.
Additionally 890,000 new eBay shoppers made their first purchase via mobile in 2011, which is a 113 per cent growth on 2010.
eBay payment platform PayPal also saw a large increase in mobile use, generating $4 billion in 2011, up from $750 million in 2010. This led Donohoe to reveal that PayPal is set to pass $7 billion in mobile payments this year.
