India with over 38 million Facebook users ( data: Social Bakers) is expected to be the number one market for Facebook in the coming years. Currently it follows U.S.A with 155+ million users and Indonesia with 40+ million users.
According to Vaughan Smith, Facebook’s vice president for mobile partnerships and corporate development, India the third largest market in terms of number of users will soon surpass Indonesia and then the US. According to Comscore data released in June, one in three Internet user in India was a Facebook user and India adds around 5-7 million internet users a month.
An IMRB and IAMAI survey states that the country’s internet population was 112 million in September, which is likely to go up to 121 million by the year end. At this rate, India will overtake the US, which has 245 million internet users, within two years, the survey adds.
Recent Facebook Statistics show that more than 350 million active users currently access Facebook through their mobile devices and more than 475 mobile operators globally work to deploy and promote Facebook mobile products. With more than half of Indian users accessing Facebook through mobile, Facebook is now concentrating on making it easily accessible on cheaper and simpler mobile phones. It announced a partnership with mobile phone chipset maker MediaTek.
Mediatek will embed the Facebook application on its mobile platform solution, MRE, which will be offered to handset makers. Currently it is working with the Indian brands such as Micromax and Spice Mobility to offer the solution on affordable low-cost handsets being sold in India.
